The socio-cultural changes of the last few years have made it necessary to change the designer’s paradigm. The need to train a new type of transversal designer has become evident —someone capable of working in a world of services, products and processes in a context of social change and technological innovation.
As the BEDA (Bureau of European Design Associations) points out, the new studies of design must focus their efforts on fomenting the flexibility and ability to work in a team, as well as encouraging an analytic and synthetic capacity that allows designers to confront major challenges facing future professionals in today’s society.
This has led us to rethink the ways and forms of teaching —a new methodology that fosters collaboration, investigation and evaluation among students. Creativity based on experimentation is encouraged, with a scientific base in accordance with modern-day times.
The didactics of innovation must prepare designers to bring added value to their projects; defining the new needs demanded by users, while integrating innovations that are born from advances in science and technology. They must discern the bearings of change with objective criteria and keep up-to-date with key issues that mark the direction of innovation at all times.
